About SJAI

Why SJAI Exists

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing how governments, businesses, courts, and societies operate. Yet the rules, institutions, and expertise needed to govern these technologies are still developing. Society for Justice & AI (SJAI) was established to strengthen the conversation on AI governance in Bangladesh and South Asia through independent research, policy analysis, education, and public dialogue.

AI Governance Is a Policy Challenge

AI is no longer only a technology issue. It is shaping decisions in areas such as justice, employment, education, healthcare, public services, and access to information. Questions of accountability, transparency, privacy, safety, and fairness therefore require effective AI policy and governance frameworks. SJAI examines these questions through interdisciplinary research and evidence-based policy analysis.

South Asia Needs Context-Specific Research

Global debates on artificial intelligence are often shaped by the priorities and institutions of a relatively small number of countries and technology companies. The realities of Bangladesh and South Asia are different. AI governance research must account for local laws, institutions, languages, economic conditions, digital infrastructure, and development priorities. SJAI works to bring these perspectives into both national and international discussions on responsible AI and AI governance.

Governance Must Keep Pace With Innovation

The development and deployment of AI can create significant opportunities, but it can also introduce new risks and deepen existing inequalities. Effective governance requires more than regulation after the fact. It requires informed institutions, capable professionals, meaningful public participation, and continuous research. SJAI works across AI policy, law, justice, technology, and society to help build the knowledge and capacity needed for responsible AI governance.

What we do

Research, Policy, and Capacity for Responsible AI Governance

SJAI works across research, policy, education, and public dialogue to strengthen AI governance in Bangladesh and South Asia. We examine how artificial intelligence affects law, justice, public institutions, work, rights, and society, and translate that knowledge into practical approaches for responsible AI governance.

Research & Analysis

We conduct independent research on the legal, social, economic, and institutional implications of artificial intelligence. Our work examines issues including AI regulation, AI and law, algorithmic accountability, data governance, digital rights, labour, and the impact of AI on public institutions.

AI Policy & Governance

We contribute to the development of practical and context-sensitive AI policy and governance frameworks. Our work considers how governments and institutions can address issues of accountability, transparency, safety, fairness, privacy, and responsible AI adoption.

Capacity Building

Effective AI governance requires institutions and professionals with the knowledge to understand and assess emerging technologies. Through executive education, training programmes, and initiatives such as the AI Governance Summer School, we build practical capacity among policymakers, legal professionals, researchers, technologists, and civil society

Dialogue & Public Engagement

We bring together policymakers, researchers, legal professionals, technologists, civil society, and other stakeholders to examine the questions shaping AI governance. Through policy discussions, public events, and collaborative initiatives, we create space for perspectives from Bangladesh, South Asia, and the Global South to inform the wider AI governance conversation.
